Eight Fun Fall Activities for Free

Author: one tough job

As the temperature drops and leaves start to change, it’s clear that autumn is creeping into New England. Now is the best time to enjoy all of the beautiful weather and outdoor activities that the season has to offer, and luckily many of these family-friendly options are completely free! From spending time in nature to cuddling up for a cozy movie night in, check out these eight great activities guaranteed to get you into the fall spirit!

1. Build a Leaf Pile, Jump, and Repeat

Insert some family fun into what otherwise might be your least favorite fall chore. Kids of all ages can help collect leaves into a pile, moving the job along quickly. Once your pile is big enough, let the kids go crazy. Not only is this a great way to get outdoors, but it should tire them out, making bedtime a breeze.

2. Collect Art Supplies in Your Own Backyard

From Thanksgiving hand turkeys to pinecone crafts, autumn is the perfect opportunity for some DIY. Encourage your kids to explore the outdoors and search for pretty leaves, acorn tops, and more. These supplies can be used for a variety of indoor art projects as the weather gets colder.

3. Explore New England

With the changing colors and beautiful weather, Fall is arguably the more beautiful time of year in Massachusetts. Get the most out of the good weather with a kid-friendly hike or nature walk. Stay close to home, or venture outside of Massachusetts with these great options.

4. Visit a Pumpkin Patch

Whether you’re picking the perfect pumpkin or snapping some cute family photos, pumpkin patches are a must for fall. Let your kids pick their favorite to take home for carving, and remember to save the seeds for roasting!

5. Check Out a Fall Festival

Apple cider donuts, corn mazes, music, and more await you at any number of fall festivals around Massachusetts. Pick a few family friendly options from this list, all close enough to Boston for a day trip.

6. Go Apple Picking

While this option isn’t always free, it is a great way to get fresh produce. Spend the day picking apples with the whole family, then check out these fun apple-inspired recipes that are easy enough for your toddler to help make.

7. Have a Spooky Movie Night

As the weather gets colder, a cozy night in might be just what your family needs. Grab the popcorn and check out these 55 Halloween Movies that won’t scare the socks off of your kids. From classics like Casper to a Halloween spinoff of Curious George, you’re sure to find the perfect option for the whole family.

8. Build a Fire

As the weather gets colder, it can be hard to find ways to spend time outdoors. Try spending an afternoon collecting sticks and firewood in the backyard, then enjoy a cozy evening by the fire. You can even make dinner part of the fun with hotdog roasting and s’mores! Just make sure to follow fire safety precautions, and watch kids carefully near the open flames.
